Read Receipt Spam

I'm on a few large lists within technical communities at work. We're not talking random non-technical people, most of these folks are in some way involved with the design of enterprise hardware and software. Okay, so it's not my grandmother's genealogy list.

It never ceases to amaze me, but nearly every day someone sends out an email to the list with a read receipt.

How does this happen? I need to know what's happening at the other end of the keyboard when this happens.

As far as I can tell, they must have read receipts turned on for every email. This alone is frightening. What's more frightening is you have to manually turn this on in Outlook (our standard client which the headers confirm).

Tell me people aren't out there actively turning read receipts on for every email. Tell me there isn't some NGO re-education camp being set up to deprogram them. If not, what are we waiting for?

# re: Read Receipt Spam

Many many people have this on for every message they send. In Outlook you can tell before you open the email, if you choose to display the correct field that is.

Yeah, but my question is 'why?' Why do they have this on? Do they turn it on once and not know how to turn it off? Are there people out there that actually want to get a read receipt on every email they send? God save us from these people...
